J-1 EV Financial Requirement

All J-1 Exchange Visitors and J-2 dependents must sufficient funding to cover the duration of his or her J program. At UC Santa Cruz the minimum monthly funding requirement is: $2000 for self, $1000 for a spouse, and $500 for each child.

All funding documents must be: 

  • Issued within the past 6 months
  • Amount must be converted to U.S. dollars using an online currency converter; attach a printout showing currency values
  • Translated into English 

Acceptable Funding Documentation

Program Sponsor. UC Santa Cruz salary, grant, reimbursement, per diem, stipend, endowment, etc. Provide appointment letter to indicate amount, dates, percentage, authorized signature.

Other Organization Funds. J-1 EV's home government, home country salary, university salary, or scholarships or fellowships. Provide official award letter on letterhead or logo listing funding amount and any other details. Calculate living expenses only, do not include health insurance coverage or travel related expenses or transportation coverage.

Personal Funds. Provide personal bank acount letter with bank logo or letterhead. If sponsor is a family member, also submit Affidavit of Financial Support. Minimum required funding is $2000/mo for self, $1000/mo for spouse, $500/mo for each child, multiply by total number of months in the length of the program.
